Just a heads up, this information is relevant for the United States ONLY.
What are my tax obligations?
Under US tax laws, platforms like Airtasker are required to collect certain information from Taskers who earn more than a threshold in a calendar year. This is so we can provide you with a 1099 form, which you'll need when filing your taxes.
To meet these legal requirements, we’ll ask you to:
- Verify your identity (by uploading an official ID), and
- Submit your tax information (such as your Tax Identification Number).
These steps help ensure we’re compliant with IRS regulations, and they only take a few minutes to complete.
What is a Tax Identification Number?
A tax identification number (TIN) is the number the IRS uses to identify you for tax purposes.
- For most U.S. individuals, it’s your Social Security Number (SSN).
- For businesses or freelancers, it might be an Employer Identification Number (EIN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
It’s basically the number the government uses to track your tax information and make sure your earnings are reported correctly. If you are unsure which applies, default to your Social Security Number (SSN).
Are you reporting my earnings to the tax office?
We’re legally required to report certain information to the IRS, including earnings made through Airtasker. If you earn more than a threshold in a calendar year, we must report your earnings and issue you a 1099 form.
This is a standard requirement for platforms like Airtasker and helps both you and us stay compliant with US tax laws. You’ll receive a copy of your 1099 form to use when filing your taxes.
What are my tax obligations?
As an independent contractor, it’s your responsibility to make sure you understand your tax obligations. Airtasker is not authorised to provide taxation advice, so if you are not sure, or have any questions regarding your tax obligations, please seek advice from your local taxation authority or tax professional.
Like with any income, it’s important to be aware of any financial and tax obligations that may apply to your Airtasker earnings. If you’re earning an income from providing services through Airtasker then you need to pay tax on that income.
All of this income may be taxable, per your local tax authority’s regulations. We recommend contacting a tax professional to get advice on what applies to your situation. You’ll need to keep an accurate record of all your Airtasker activities and the amounts you earn from those tasks and disclose it as business income on your tax return. Remember to record the gross amount (task price) that customers (posters) pay you, not the net amount you receive after the Service Fee is removed.
Depending on your location, earnings and personal circumstances, your tax obligations may be different. It’s important to be diligent and research what applies specifically to you, using an authorized source. If you are required to make any report on your Airtasker income for tax purposes, it’s important that you accurately disclose everything.
