When is the service fee charged?

  •  What is the service fee?

A service fee is a fee that’s applied when you’re assigned to a task that you’ve made an offer on. You’ll only be charged a service fee if you’re actually assigned to a task - if you don’t win the work, you won’t pay the service fee.

  • Why do you charge a service fee?

There are costs involved with running the Airtasker marketplace, and we charge a service fee on all payments to keep it running and growing.

It’s like when you pay for the cost of a Yellow Pages ad to promote your business and get opportunities, except in this case you only pay it when you get work.

The service fee is then re-invested into covering costs including credit card payments, fraud protection and provision of public liability insurance, personal accident cover and customer support. The fees also help us to continue to improve our technology and invest into marketing campaigns to bring you more task opportunities.

  • How is the service fee calculated?

This service fee is influenced by factors including location, value, popularity and repeat bookings of the task, so check it when you make an offer on a task. You’ll see a clear breakdown of the service fee displayed when making an offer on a task, like this:

  • How does the service fee work?

When you make an offer on a task, the full breakdown of the service fee will be displayed so you can make sure the task is right for you. You’ll only be charged a service fee if you’re actually assigned to a task - if you don’t win the work, you won’t pay the service fee. We also display any GST payable.

Airtasker is registered for GST and so we’re required to pay GST to the ATO on the service fee applied to Taskers.

Depending on your own individual tax circumstances, you may be able to claim back the GST on the service fee (check out this article for more info).

The fee will only be applied once you’ve been assigned to the task. After the task has been completed and the Poster releases payment, you’ll then receive the task payment, minus the service fee.
