PART 1: The background
Before we jump into where we're at on our journey to build out a new way to earn on Airtasker, here's a bit of a sneak peek into the inner workings of the brains behind Airtasker...
Our mission at Airtasker is to empower our Taskers to realise the full value of their skills.
We have teams of passionate people across Australia dedicated entirely to thinking about how we can help our talented Taskers find customers, monetise their skills, realise their potential and earn more money. It really is at the heart of everything we do - it's what drives us forwards.
Earlier this year, we started exploring the possibility of something very exciting... a new booking model that would let Taskers list their services on Airtasker and give Posters the ability to browse and purchase these services in an e-commerce-style experience. Guess it's a little bit like Amazon… or Airbnb... or The Iconic (you get the picture)... but for services. 🤔
It wasn’t exactly a lightbulb moment - more of an idea that evolved and took shape over time - but it excited us. Why? Because:
- It puts our Taskers firmly in the driving seat 🚕
- It gives our Taskers the space they deserve to market themselves and their unique skills to the world 📺
- It makes booking easier for Posters ✅
- It reminds Posters of all the awesome things they can get done on Airtasker, so it creates more job opportunities for our Taskers 👩🏻🎤
Since the day we decided to make it a reality, teams of people across the Sydney-office (well, remotely) have been rallying together to build it out…
An online marketplace for services.
Tim, our CEO, has been the driving force behind this vision. Here's what he has to say about these new developments:

Every single person has unique skills - whether it’s providing professional services or something quirky that only he/she can do, this marketplace will finally give Taskers the opportunity to showcase those skills to the 4+ million people in our community.”
PART 2: So how are we doing?
We’ve spent the last few months interviewing Taskers and Posters, talking to our support team about the challenges our customers are facing and using this insight to design a solution that we think will be a better experience for all. Our engineers (the guys who are in charge of writing the code) have also been working their socks off to turn our designs into a reality.
Very excitingly, we reached ‘Launch 1’ in October 🎉!
That means that our Taskers are now able to create their very own listing on Airtasker, showcasing their skills and services. This is a big step forwards.
Mitch, one of our Tech gurus leading the project said:
"Listings has been an incredibly exciting project to work on since we started a few months ago. It’s a radically different way to use Airtasker for both Taskers and Posters and as a result, required us to build a lot of new functionality from the ground up. It’s one of the largest new features we’ve ever built. It definitely wasn’t easy and it took a big team of talented engineers to bring it to life. This is just the beginning! We can’t wait to get cracking on Milestone 2. We know that there are Taskers on Airtasker with amazing skills and we can’t wait to see how they use the new features we’ve built to help them showcase their skills and earn more money!"
PART 3: What next?
This is only the beginning. Although Taskers can create their very own listings, these listings don't yet go live on Airtasker for customers to browse and request to book.
The final leg of the mountain climb is to build out the marketplace that will display the wonderful listings, so customers can browse and purchase them.
You can imagine we are building out a brand new shop in a shopping mall. We've started to collect the products that customers will have access to (your awesome listings!). The next step is to construct a place to house these awesome products - we need a building, we need 'shelves' so that we can display all the unique listings created by our Taskers, we need a shop window to entice customers and bring them in and we need a big party when we open the doors of the shop to the public. That's what we're now working on. 🛍
We are hoping to be able to put your listings live in the all new Airtasker store for customers to browse and request to book in early 2021. This will be an absolutely game-changing update, the biggest in Airtasker history, and will open up a powerful new income stream for our Taskers, no matter their skill or service. 🛒
Steve, our Product Manager, says:
"We’ve come such a long way with this new feature. Our Taskers don’t really get to see ‘under the hood’ at Airtasker and how we are working every day to find ways to help them earn more and realise the full value of their skills. It’s been a really tough few months to get to this point, but I’m absolutely stoked that Taskers can now start setting up listings! One of the things that I think makes Airtasker so special is the wacky, unique tasks we see getting done on the platform. I’m excited to put that power now in Taskers' hands, to let them create listings for really unique, quirky services that neither we, nor customers, would have ever even thought of."
